Postgraduate Study in Law

Overview

NALSAR’s one‑year LL.M. is an intensive postgraduate programme that combines advanced coursework with sustained, supervised research in accordance with University Grants Commission (UGC) credit norms. Students complete three mandatory courses of 4 credits each, six optional courses of 3 credits each, and a 6‑credit dissertation, ensuring both breadth and depth of engagement with contemporary legal issues. The curriculum is deliberately structured for those interested in academic and research‑oriented careers, emphasising rigorous doctrinal analysis, theoretical reflection and high‑quality legal writing.

Rather than locking students into a narrow track at entry, the programme is built on the conviction that strong specialists must first be strong generalists. Postgraduate students, therefore, do not declare a specialisation at the outset; instead, they work towards one over the year by completing at least 18 credits in a preferred area. Subject to faculty availability and minimum enrolment requirements, optional courses have enabled students to specialise in:

  1. Corporate and Commercial Laws
  2. Criminal Law
  3. Intellectual Property Rights
  4. International Trade and Business Laws
  5. Public Law and Legal Theory

LL.M. graduates are highly regarded by law schools across India, supported by structured teaching‑assistantship opportunities that provide live classroom experience, and many also find the programme a valuable intellectual foundation alongside preparation for civil services and judicial services examinations. The programme is not designed as a placement pipeline for commercial law firms or business houses, and such roles are pursued independently by students.

With nearly three decades of teaching at NALSAR, I have seen the value of an LL.M. programme that combines structured learning with sustained research. Our curriculum brings together mandatory and elective courses with a strong dissertation component, while offering focused pathways in Corporate and Commercial Laws, Criminal Law, and Intellectual Property Law. We encourage students not to narrow their interests too early, but to grow as well-rounded scholars before developing a specialisation. The dissertation process, supported through proposal guidance, mid-term review, viva, and external evaluation, is central to building rigorous research skills. The programme is particularly suited to those who wish to pursue and deepen their engagement with law in a thoughtful and sustained manner.

Student Testimonial

This year, although brief, meant more than I imagined. It made me engage, reflect and sit with ideas that don’t have easy answers, leaving behind a lifetime of lessons.
