NALSAR’s one‑year LL.M. is an intensive postgraduate programme that combines advanced coursework with sustained, supervised research in accordance with University Grants Commission (UGC) credit norms. Students complete three mandatory courses of 4 credits each, six optional courses of 3 credits each, and a 6‑credit dissertation, ensuring both breadth and depth of engagement with contemporary legal issues. The curriculum is deliberately structured for those interested in academic and research‑oriented careers, emphasising rigorous doctrinal analysis, theoretical reflection and high‑quality legal writing.
Rather than locking students into a narrow track at entry, the programme is built on the conviction that strong specialists must first be strong generalists. Postgraduate students, therefore, do not declare a specialisation at the outset; instead, they work towards one over the year by completing at least 18 credits in a preferred area. Subject to faculty availability and minimum enrolment requirements, optional courses have enabled students to specialise in:
LL.M. graduates are highly regarded by law schools across India, supported by structured teaching‑assistantship opportunities that provide live classroom experience, and many also find the programme a valuable intellectual foundation alongside preparation for civil services and judicial services examinations. The programme is not designed as a placement pipeline for commercial law firms or business houses, and such roles are pursued independently by students.
